Cinnamon

One ingredient in our drink is cinnamon. It is a spice that comes from tree bark.  During black history month, Black-owned businesses use cinnamon as a celebration spice to represent business ownership. It symbolizes wealth. Many people use this spice in breakfast pastries and desserts. We chose this ingredient because it is both sweet and spicy.

Vanilla

One ingredient in our drink is vanilla. It is a bean from a plant (the vanilla orchid). They are dried and used as spices. Around 80% of the world’s vanilla is from Madagascar, which is a country in East Africa. This ingredient is important in Black history because during the Jim Crow era, black people were not allowed to eat vanilla ice cream because it was considered “pure.” Also, Edmond Albius, who was a twelve-year-old boy, figured out how to pollinate vanilla orchids by hand. He was held in slavery when he discovered this, and many people tried to take credit for his work. We still use his method today. Madagascar currently uses Albius’ pollination method. People use it to add flavor to foods and drinks. We chose this ingredient because vanilla smooths out flavor, and Simone is strong under pressure and really good on the balance beam.
