Ginger Root

One ingredient in our drink is ginger. It is the root of a plant and is often used as a spice. People use it for herbal medicine and teas. In United States history, slaves would use ginger to help people recover from stomach aches and colds. The spice was introduced to Africa during the 15th and 16th centuries through trade. In Western Africa, people make a spice blend called Kitchen Pepper that is used in cooking, and it includes ginger. We are using ginger in our drink because it has a strong spicy flavor.

Honey

One ingredient in our drink is honey. It is often used as a sweetener. This ingredient comes from bees. Beekeeping was important to black history because it was a way for black farmers to be successful in something other than cotton farming. The Tuskegee Institute is a Historically Black College/University (HBCU) that made it part of the curriculum and was led by George Washington Carver. Historically, it was used in black culture for medicine, nutrition, and wealth. People use honey to add sweetness to drinks.
